Advanced Ultrasonic Testing (AUT)

Acuren’s AUT services are used in a wide variety of in-service and construction/fabrication applications, including weld inspection, boiler tube inspection and flaw sizing.

AUT/C-Scan uses ultrasound and automated scanners to map out and record the size and shape of corrosion and flaws.

Advantages include accuracy, a wide variety of applications, speed of test, and large area coverage.

AUT systems can be deployed via:

  • Robotic vehicles
  • Tethered crawlers
  • Specialized track systems

Automated systems permit uniform testing while the inspected vessel remains in operational service, even at temperatures up to 700°F.

PrinciplesAutomated ultrasonic scanners map out and record the size and shape of corrosion and flaws.
How and where is it used? Can be deployed via robotic vehicle, tethered crawlers or specialized track systems to permit inspection in difficult to access, high temperature or unusually shaped areas. Permits testing while the inspected vessel remains in operational service.

Wide variety of in-service and construction/fabrication applications, including weld inspection, boiler tube inspection and flaw sizing.
Petrochemical, pipeline, power, fabrication and pulp & paper industries
Applicable
Codes/Standards
AUT has been used in lieu of radiography for Code work
Form of report or deliverable?C-Scan report mapping wall thickness and position
Provides ease of comparison over time
Digital format
AdvantagesHigh penetrating power
High sensitivity
Fast speed of test with 100% coverage over large areas
High temperature tolerance (used at temperatures up to 700 degrees F)
Automatic deployment mechanism improves test results due to a consistent pressure on the transducer, with steady motion and uniform coverage.
Advances in equipment technology and reporting capability have resulted in cost savings.
LimitationsAdvanced technician knowledge required for development of procedures
Surface must be prepared by cleaning and removal of loose scale
Couplant required to provide transfer of ultrasonic wave energy
Rough, irregular parts are hard to inspect
